Silhouette Hands Vermont Wedding

We worked with Vermont couple Dana and Katie to design and letterpress print their wedding invitations. They had a custom silhouette using their own hands to make a heart shape produced by Le Papier Studios. We used this motif throughout the invitation stationery. The soft cotton paper and bright blue silhouettes are contrasted with a simple recycled brown bag envelope and typewriter style navy typography – just the right balance of a raw yet refined style. The invites are printed in a square format with 2 inks on Crane Lettra, 100% cotton stock. All the cards were letterpress printed together on a 13 x 13 press sheet for cost effective production.

Dana and Katie are excited to be on the cusp of history, celebrating just after Vermont legalizes gay marriage on September 1st. Congrats!

Typography for Breakfast

It is usually bad form to blog or tweet about your breakfast. But sometimes it’s just too gooood. This morning a few of us from the studio went over to St.Paul for breakfast at the Copper Dome Restaurant. The type is served up hot as the walls in this place are covered with vintage flour milling ephemera. The pancakes were good as well.

Birds of Sadness Letterpress Poster

We designed and letterpress printed this poster for the Sweet Hair poster show featuring 37 Minneapolis artists. All prints are hair-inspired, handmade and created just for this show. A portion of proceeds benefits Locks of Love. It hangs at the Art Minion Gallery in Northeast Minneapolis until mid July.  If you love hair, check out the Sweet Hair site.

Our 18 x 26 poster is a single color printed on 220lb Crane Lettra Pearl White. The type intertwines with a .30 point stroke that flows throughout the poster, making a nice deep impression on the cotton stock. The quote is a Chinese proverb that reads “You cannot prevent the birds of sadness from passing over your head, but you can prevent their making a nest in your hair.” If there are any left when the show comes down at Art Minion, we’ll sell them on our site.

Serious Foodies Business Cards

We just love folks that can blur the line between the disciplines of design and illustration. Jessica Hische is certainly one of those rarities. Be sure and check out her site for more great hand lettering and typography. She designed these business cards for new project by Mischa and Jacob DeHart called Culinary Culture – A Site for Serious & Aspiring Foodies.

We letterpress printed these cards on 220lb Crane Lettra, 100% cotton stock. They are printed three colors on the logo side and two colors on the text side. Additionally, the logo side needed the dark red run as two passes – something we often do in letterpress when there is a solid area of color and text on the same plate. The heavy ink density needed to cover a solid versus the light ink density for text lets the type remain crisp and the solid run as saturated as possible. (That means this piece of paper ran through the press six times – four on front, two on back.)

And of course they just wouldn’t be complete without some edge coloring. These have a contrasting green edge which is nice and noticeable on the thick 220lb stock. We usually recommend edge coloring be applied to stock heavier than 160lbC. Coloring can be applied to thinner sheets, but the effect is more pronounced with thicker paper._0000_culinary_culture_business_cards

Shine Flashlight Box – Ephemera Redux

Shine Advertising Co. in Madison, WI designed this flashlight box wrapper as a promotional piece for their agency. The look is a pretty sweet 1800′s ephemera inspired style and inside is a mini Maglite flashlight. We letterpress printed in four spot colors on Smart Genisis Husk 110lb C – 100% PCW. There are three tones of blue ink plus red ink.

Chad, the design director, came in and spent the day on press with us. Take a look at a few press room images he created with an iphone camera using an app called HiCon – kinda nice black and white effect.

A note on press checks -  We are always happy to have clients come in for press checks. And if you can’t make it, we often do a virtual press check and send along photos as we are on press. We schedule a press time and you can wait by your computer for letterpress goodness. That really gives no excuse not to letterpress with us. :)

Top Stitched Wedding Booklet

Custom wedding projects are a specialty for our studio. When a marriage has multiple events and large amounts of information – a booklet structure just makes sense. We worked with stationery designer Kavita Ahuja on this letterpress printed booklet for her brothers wedding. (Also, her and her fiancee also have a very cool website selling boutique handmade perfumes called D.S. & Durga.)

The booklet is a french folded structure with a cover that wraps the spine to hide the raw page edges. The french folding allows a nice letterpress impression on each page while hiding any show through of impression on the interior since the backs are hidden. Everything is printed on Pearl White Crane Lettra 80lbT with navy and gold ink. The binding edge is stitched from the top with a navy thread. The booklet fits into an existing A7 square flap envelope. Note on that the envelope can print both the face and the flap by opening them before printing.

Woodgrain & Crest Letterpress Wedding

When we posted the Save The Date card by designer Nick Brue a couple months back, we were super excited to see what he had in mind for the design of the actual wedding invitation. Finally, here is his design that just recently left the pressroom:

The folder is printed with a tonal custom woodgrain pattern using a clear varnish ink on letterpress with heavy impression. A belly band is fitted to the exterior of the folder with a Continue reading ‘Woodgrain & Crest Letterpress Wedding’

Something Old & New: Wedding Type

_0003_jamie_ryan_wedding_invite_type

We love wedding designs that challenge the status quo. The unexpected combination of a antique woodtype-inspired-tuscan-style font alongside a modern san serif face seems to work here. We like the bold linear quality of the design with hearts to add a little finesse. And, it was designed by the groom himself (Ryan Floss).

_0004_jamie_ryan_wedding_direction_card

Another unique thing about this invite is the size. Invites need not be giant. Making things smaller certainly helps keep the cost down. The main invite card here is only A2 (5.5 x 4.25). The direction card is actually a standard business card size of 3.5 x 2. That is a nice pocket size to take along to the event. All the cards are letterpress printed on 100% cotton Crane Lettra Flo. White paper.

Ornamental Wickerwork: Carolina Wedding Invitation

We figured we’ll keep going with the wedding invitation posts all this week.

This letterpress invitation is an exquisite balance of wickerwork ornament and type. The graphic ribbon creates a wonderful sense of dimension as it intertwines the ornamental panels. The script font combines with the serif and italic fonts to establish a Continue reading ‘Ornamental Wickerwork: Carolina Wedding Invitation’

Black Tie & Black Paper: Wedding In Edinburgh

Setting the tone for a black tie event with rich black paper just seems logical. Black paper should actually be a requirement if you are having a reception in a castle. (insert jealous sigh here) This contemporary type and linear design is letterpress printed with silver ink on 250gsm Stonehenge Black Paper in a horizontal format. It’s nice to see the type arranged outside typical wedding layouts. These invites were designed by a fantastic design firm – Field - based out of Copenhagen and Dublin. Which goes to show we are happy to letterpress print custom work for designers everywhere.

Jim Sherraden Workshop at Hamilton Wood Type

columbia3

columbia2

This is a museum that most certainly needs the support of designers and printers. There are still 10 slots to fill for Jim Sherraden’s May 22, 23, 24 workshop at Hamilton Wood Type in Two Rivers Wisconsin. The cost is $400 with all proceeds being donated to the museum.

Fourteen lucky printers will have the chance to print from Hamilton’s collection under the watchful eye and wise cracking mouth of Hatch Show Print’s printing maestro. The fun will start Friday night starting at around 7, go all day (and into the night) Saturday and a half day Sunday. You can reserve a double occupancy room at the Light House Inn for a special workshop rate of $70.00 night. Call Greg Corrigan or Jim Moran at Hamilton Wood Type at 920-794-6272 to register and for more details.

And because we love this place, Studio On Fire taking part in a poster edition to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Hamilton Museum.  It will open Saturday, May 30th and run through Labor Day 2009 at the museum. Proceeds benefit the museum. Crap, it’s due this week and it ain’t finished!

And because it’s funny, here is a print for sale at Hamilton by Allyson Vanstone.

Smashing Alphabets Letterpress Poster

Coming soon to an alphabet near you is a typographic mash up. Once again Spunk Design Machine created a simply amazing poster, this time for Chank. Be sure and check him out as he tours the design community.

And getting smashed comes easy for paper on a letterpress. Hot off our big Heidelberg cylinder press, these are some stylin’ letterpress posters. Printed on a lighter weight 65lb Poptone Cover from French paper and letterpressed in two colors. I’d steal it.
