When you have a pressroom full of gadgets (and more importantly, people who know how to use them) the possibilities for self promotion pieces are endless. Recently we decided to make an oversized business card based on one of our most used pressroom tools, the palette knife.
Orange ink was laid down first, followed by an overprinting of blue ink on the handle to make the brown woodgrain handle, in addition to giving it a dirty ink spattered quality. French PopTone Sweet Tooth 100# Cover was used on the outside, with a 100# Tangy Orange triplexed down the center, ending with a total thickness of 400# cover. A custom die cut finished the piece off nicely.

3 Advertising, based in Albuquerque, designed these ingenious business cards sleeves for photographer Michael Barley that we letterpress printed not long ago.
The sleeves were letterpress printed on French Speckletone Natural 80# cover stock. After printing the sleeves were custom diecut, including a window that showcased examples of Michael’s photography from the inserted card. To keep everything all together a small sticker was letterpress printed with a tonal ink on a kraft label stock that was then custom diecut and pinhole perforated.
Designed by Calgary based design studio Wax, these cards for a small business bookkeeper are quite possibly the smallest thing we’ve ever produced. Measuring out at a compact 1″ x .6,” the cards were so petit we were unable to trim these down using our paper cutter (there simply wasn’t anywhere to hold onto them) so a custom made 8up die was used. Printed on Crane Lettra Flo White 220c with one ink on both sides.
We photographed them with some firecrackers we had laying around the studio (what? don’t you have firecrackers on your desk?) to give you a better sense of their size.
Jane, from the family/design/lifestyle blog See Jane Blog, approached us to design and produce some fresh cards for her before she headed off to the annual Alt Summit blogger conference in January. Jane was great to work with, she had a few ideas and elements she wanted included but really lets us run and create something that would look great letterpress printed. Some of our favorite features include the custom diecut (designed to accentuate her signature asterisk) and the thin linework pattern (referencing back to her patterned blog header).
Production wise, these were printed on Crane Lettra Flo White 110lb cover stock that was custom duplexed to a 220lb weight after printing. With two inks, a blind impression and a custom diecut, the presssheet for these cards ran through the press a total of four times.

We were lucky to once again work with the kind folks over at Martha Stewart Weddings. For their Fall 2011 issue (on newsstands now!) we were asked to create a wedding suite with a distinctly geometric flair.
One of our more masculine suites, you won’t see any cursive fonts or extraneous illustration announcing the celebration of this union. The sleeve, made out of French Construction Nightshift Blue, has a custom peek-a-boo diecut that reveals wedding details as the card slides out the top. Navy blue and warm gray inks overprint each other on 110 lb Crane Lettra Ecru stock. Custom envelopes with delicate line work complete the suite.
